Obliquity designs and casts permanent astronomical earthworks: leaning monoliths of cast concrete, set to true north and bored to the celestial pole. They keep no hour and strike no bell — they keep the year, the precession, and the long return of the pole star.

A clock built to outlast
the language that names it

An Obliquity instrument has no dial, no hand, no power — a mass of concrete leaned off plumb and pierced once, so a shaft of empty air runs through it to the pole of the turning sky. The Earth does the rest.

We are not building a monument. We are building a witness.

One mark. One morning.
One tick a year.

A low sun rakes the shaft and lays a single blade of amber across the chamber, resting on one engraved line for less than a held breath. Not a second, not an hour, but a year, struck once, in light.

the pole star changes

An instrument is not made to be right forever. It is made to be exactly right once, for a long time, and then to become a record of how the sky used to stand. That, finally, is the time we keep.

[ 002 ] · AXIAL TILT 23.44° — TRUE NORTH

Obliquity is the tilt that makes the seasons

The Earth leans. Its axis stands 23.44 degrees off the plane of its orbit, and that single angle is the reason there are solstices, equinoxes, and a year worth keeping. Stand the planet upright and the seasons vanish. The lean is the clockwork.

We take the name, and the angle, literally. Each instrument is cast at the obliquity of its making — STELE I leans 23.44° off vertical — so that the slab's slant is a scale model of the planet's own. Through that leaning mass we bore a second line, the polar shaft, until it finds the celestial pole and holds it, fixed, for a human lifetime.

A1Obliquity
The tilt of Earth's axis to its orbital plane — presently 23.44°, or 23°26′. The source of the seasons; the slant of the slab.
A2True north
The direction of the geographic pole, not the magnetic one. Every instrument is sighted to it by star, never by compass.
A3Declination
A body's angular distance north or south of the celestial equator. The sun's runs from +23.44° to −23.44° and back across one year.
A4Sidereal day
One rotation of Earth relative to the stars: 23h 56m 04.091s — shorter than the solar day by very nearly four minutes.
A5Precession
The slow conical wobble of the axis, one full turn every 25,772 years. It changes which star marks the pole.

Instruments, built and intended

STELE I is the only instrument under construction. The works beyond it are designed, sited on paper, or held as intention — listed so the scope of the practice is clear, not to suggest they exist in the ground. We promise slowly and pour honestly.

[ 005 ] · A LINEAGE WE DID NOT BEGIN

We work in a tradition older than the firm

Obliquity did not invent the idea of building to the sky. We inherit it. Michael Heizer has been raising City in the Nevada desert for more than fifty years; Robert Smithson coiled the Spiral Jetty into the Great Salt Lake; James Turrell is still shaping Roden Crater to hold light; Charles Ross aligned Star Axis to the precession itself; Nancy Holt set her Sun Tunnels to the solstices.

We claim none of their work and none of their authorship. We name them because an instrument should declare its references as plainly as its dimensions.

Land art taught the desert to keep time. We are trying to make it keep an appointment.
